The STEP program is a free service that allows US citizens and nationals to enroll their trip with the nearest US Embassy or consulate in their destination. Once enrolled, travelers receive important information from the local embassy about safety conditions, etc in the destination country. Enrolling also helps the US Embassy contact travelers in an emergency (i.e. natural disaster, civil unrest or family emergency) and helps family and friends to get in contact with travelers in an emergency. Registration is not mandatory but is beneficial, especially when traveling to destinations with higher threat risks or those that are not easily accessible to modern technology.
