St. Kitts is located in the Northern Leeward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. It was originally names St. Christopher but was nicknamed St. Kitts which later became its’ official name. A historic gateway to the Caribbean, St Kitts played a crucial role in the European struggle for the islands in the West Indies. Many remnants of those colonial times remain today including Brimstone Hill Fortress, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean.
The capital, Basseterre, was the first French town in the Caribbean.
