According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), Ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people”. With the increasing awareness of the general population in regards to environmental impact, this type of travel has been increasing in popularity in hopes of decreasing individual carbon imprints. TIES lists 6 principles of ecotourism which include minimizing impact, building environmental and cultural awareness and respect, providing positive experiences for both host and visitors, providing direct financial benefit for conservation, providing financial benefits and empowerment for local people and raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental and social climate.
