There has been a great deal of buzz about newly lifted restrictions allowing US citizens travel to Cuba including many commercial travel websites promoting tours and deals to the country. Although some of the restrictions have been lifted, US citizens remain unable to travel to Cuba for tourism. This is due to the US continuing the restrictive ban on US citizens spending money in Cuba. However, US citizens can now obtain a license allowing travel to Cuba through the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. There are two types of licenses offered that can be obtained for specific reasons such as full time professional/graduate studies conducting academic research, professional journalists on assignment and persons engaging in non profit cultural exhibitions to name a few. If you are interested in traveling to Cuba, make sure you obtain the appropriate license prior to purchasing any travel arrangements.
