The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) encourages the “identification, protection and preservation of cultural and national heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity”. These protected sites are identified as World Heritage Sites and can be natural or manmade. Potential sites have to meet certain criteria and the World Heritage Committee meets once per year to decide which sites to accept. UNESCO believes that World Heritage Sites belong to all of the people in the world regardless of their location and encourages travelers to visit them wherever they are.
