Identity theft is common and covers all types including financial and digital. Travelers are especially vulnerable however there are ways to prevent becoming a victim. Before traveling, remove all critical yet unnecessary documents from your purse/wallets (i.e. Social security cards, bills, medical info, etc). Guard documents at all times, securing them on your person as well as while in your hotel room. Avoid using shared and insecure internet connections. Smartphone 3G and 4G are generally more secure but take care to keep your device safe as well. Use bank ATMs only as these are less likely to be targeted by thieves. And lastly, check bank, credit card and medical accounts when you return home as well as 3-4 weeks later for any fraudulent activity.
