Souvenirs are an integral part of travel that majority of travelers purchase to commemorate their trip. And most travelers attempt to bring home souvenirs that are unique in nature. But, some of these unique souvenirs may be illegal. The obvious illegal items include illegal drugs, exotic animals, ancient relics/artifacts and products made from endangered animals.  However there are quite a few items that appear harmless but in fact are illegal. These include items such as food/fruit, certain types of alcohol, embargoed gold, knock-off goods and clothing containing dog or cat fur to name a few. Regardless of intent, if caught attempting to bring illegal souvenirs into the US will result in confiscation of the item and in some instances fines/jail time. It is the sole responsibility of the individual traveler to be aware of restricted items at all times.

For a full list of restricted items check the US Customs and Border Protection site here http://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/kbyg/prohibited-restricted
