Ever see a hotel that looks like it belongs on a scary movie set yet it is being promoted as a luxury facility? This is because there are no set standards in the hotel industry for the luxury designation making the word over used and often times very inaccurate. Therefore, the only way to get some idea of the true caliber of a hotel is to check its star rating. Per the American star rating system, to qualify for 5 stars or better, a hotel must offer above average service with 24-hour housekeeping; information for guests and discounts on local attractions; more than 1 restaurant, all of which should offer gourmet food; 24-hour room service; staff that go above and beyond with a high staff to guest ratio; a concierge; valet parking and a fitness center, health center or spa. A 4-star hotel will still have above average service but with fewer amenities and will not be as luxurious.
