Most companies that specialize in escorted tours offer what are termed guaranteed and non guaranteed departures. Non guaranteed departures tend to have more options to choose from however they can be cancelled if there are not enough people signed up for the tour. The tour operators have up to 30 days prior to the departure to notify each traveler if the tour will be cancelled, making these tours more ideal for those travelers who can be flexible to last minute schedule changes. Guaranteed departures tend not to have as many choices however it is guaranteed to commence despite the number of travelers booked. These tours are better for those travelers who do not have the flexibility in their schedule for last minute cancellations or changes. It is also important to note that regardless of the type of tour, both guaranteed and non guaranteed tours may be canceled for things that are outside of the tour companies control such as civil unrest, government policy changes and acts of God.  The refund policies vary between individual companies and may not be honored if the tour is cancelled for uncontrollable reasons. Therefore, it is always important to purchase travel insurance, preferably form a third-party supplier, to cover any non-refundable costs.
